If you work as a network administrator may already be familiar with the remote desktop connection. With a remote desktop connection, you can perform some maintenance tasks without having to come to the site. In this post, I will discuss the remote desktop connection in Windows 7 from Ubuntu Natty, Maverick, or Lucid.
Follow the steps below:
- First, you have to set up the System Properties on the Windows 7 computer (target computer).
Press Windows key+R on your keyboard and type “sysdm.cpl” or go to Control Panel => System Properties. - Enable Remote Desktop Connection by give some checkmark. See the picture below.
- Now go to your Ubuntu computer, open Terminal and type in the command below ended by pressing Enter button.
sudo apt-get install rdesktop
- Make a remote desktop connection with the command below:
rdesktop -uUSERNAME -dHOSTNAME HOSTIP -gWxH -a16 -xb -rsound:remote
Explanation:
- USERNAME = your Windows 7 login user.
- HOSTNAME = your Windows 7 computer’s network name.
- HOSTIP = the IP of your Windows 7 machine.
- W and H for the width and height in pixels of your target computer’s desktop screen, 16 is for 16 bit color and -xb if you use broadband connection or you can replace it with -xl if you use lan connection. If you want to keep the sound always availabe then use -rsound:remote
- That's all you need if you want to make some connections via text mode, but If you prefer to use GUI to remote Windows 7 from Ubuntu, then follow the next instructions.
- Open tsclient. It will be available in Application => Internet menu. If it not yet installed, type in the command below in your Terminal:
sudo apt-get install tsclient
